Overview

The Financial Counselor is responsible for providing financial counseling services through direct and indirect consultation with patients and systems to ensure financial stability of patient accounts. They are responsible for understanding the patient’s financial standing, determining a financial course of action based on that standing and seeking financial assistance as appropriate for each patient. They should understand the coordination of insurance benefits, screen for any type of assistance available and assist in coordinating in the application process with the patient and with team members (financial counselors/case managers) at each BrightView site for the appropriate course of action (foundation application, exchange plan or Medicaid enrollment). The Financial Counselor serves as the primary contact for patients, families, and site staff regarding financial assistance, insurance coverage and foundation application process.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates, initiates, monitors, and responds to all patient requests/demands.
  • Performs research, gathers financial data, and conducts focused review of Self-Pay, Medicare and Medicaid and Foundation patients billing to analyze, summarize, prepare reports, and make recommendations.
  • Coordinates with facility subject matter experts (SME) regularly/consistently regarding patient financial status.
  • Uses data and maintains database to track information including but not limited to trends regarding Self-Pay, Medicare and Medicaid and Foundation patients billing practice both within and outside of the practice.
  • Assists Self-Pay Patients with obtaining needed information to coordinate a payment arrangement. Provides assistance with completing applications for Medicaid, and Medicare as needed.
  • Utilize Care logic, Micro MD and Availity software to perform needed job functions. 
  • Submits eligibility transactions through appropriate channels.  Updates and maintains accurate and complete information in systems of record.
  • Evaluates assigned accounts receivable, performing appropriate action toward resolution, including, but not limited to, generating patient statements and posting financial transactions within system of record.
  • Serves as a SME on Medicaid application forms and processes. 
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Assure documentation is in compliance with regulatory agency requirements and best practices.
  • Adhere to the organization’s policy, procedures and professional code of ethics
  • Self-motivated and self-directed; able to work without supervision.
  • Proficient computer skills, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel); working knowledge of billing software a plus.

 

Qualifications

  • Education
    • High school diploma or equivalent; Bachelor’s degree in accounting, health care administration, finance, business, or related field preferred.
  • Experience
    • Prefer Two (2) years’ previous experience in medical billing.
