Overview

The Service Engineer will be responsible for leading instrumentation engineering, method development, and Laboratory Information System (LIS) administration to support the effectiveness, compliance, and growth of laboratory operations on a national scale. This role is both strategic and operational, requiring hands-on expertise with EIA and LCMS instrumentation, as well as oversight of technical systems that ensure accurate, timely, and compliant laboratory services.

 

Working cross-functionally with quality assurance, lab operations, data analysis, and IT teams, the Service Engineer will champion process improvements, drive departmental efficiency, and support staff development. This individual will play a critical role in the calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of instrumentation, the development and validation of testing methodologies, and the administration of the LIS system.

 

In addition to ensuring high-quality data generation and system reliability, the Service Engineer will actively contribute to training laboratory personnel, supporting system users, maintaining regulatory compliance across local, state, and federal levels, and serving as a resource for technical and operational decision-making.

Responsibilities

  • Instrument Operation and Maintenance:
    • Setup and Calibration: Setting up, optimizing, and calibrating instruments for specific analytical tasks.
    • Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Performing routine maintenance, identifying and resolving technical issues with the instruments, and ensuring optimal performance.
  • Evaluation and Development:
    • Method Development: Developing and optimizing analytical methods for specific applications, including ionization techniques and mass analyzer settings
    • Instrument Evaluation: Evaluating the performance of instruments and recommending improvements.
    • Collaboration: Collaborating with scientists to address analytical challenges and develop new applications.
  • Support and training:
    • Technical Support: Providing technical support to scientists, addressing questions, and troubleshooting issues with instruments.
    • Training: Training users in the operation and maintenance of instruments.
    • Customer Engagement: Engaging with scientists to understand their needs and provide solutions.
  • Laboratory Information Management Administration:
    • System Configuration and Maintenance: Ensure the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) is configured to meet organizational and regulatory requirements, including test panels, workflows, and user permissions. Perform regular maintenance, updates, and troubleshooting to maintain system performance and accuracy.
    • Data Integrity and Compliance: Oversee data input, output, and storage processes to guarantee accurate patient information and test results. Ensure compliance with HIPAA, CLIA, and other regulatory standards through audit trails, validation procedures, and access controls.
    • User Support and Training: Provide ongoing support and training to laboratory staff and clinicians on proper LIMS usage. Act as the liaison between the laboratory team and IT/vendor support to resolve issues and implement system enhancements.
  • Other Responsibilities:
    • Safety: Ensuring a safe working environment by following safety protocols and procedures.
    • Documentation: Maintaining accurate records of instrument maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting.
    • Inventory Management: Managing inventory of consumables and spare parts for instruments.
    • Additional Support: Stand in as Laboratory Manager or Testing Personnel on an as needed basis.

Qualifications

  • College Degree in chemistry or related science
  • At least 4 years of related clinical toxicology experience in laboratory operations
  • MBA or Masters in a related field preferred
  • Proficiency in EIA and LCMS toxicology testing required.
  • Ability to pass a drug test and background check.
  • Travel = 25% - 30%.

Required Certification/License:

  • CLIA qualified Technical Supervisor, General Supervisor, and Testing Personnel
